The
municipal term of "Ayuntamiento de Cuevas del
Almanzoras" is located to the northeast of the
province of Almeria and has an area of 263 sq.km ,
bordering at South and West on the municipalities
of Vera and Antas; at North on those of Huercal-Overa
and Pulpí; and at East on the Mediterranean
sea along 14 kilometers of coast.
The town situated in the northeast of the province in
a cosmopolitan, cultural and rich area. Its landscape portrays dry, semi-desert land full of esparto grass with some irrigated land and fertile plains area.
The
privileged location and the proximity to the coast
have made of this city a local economic and trade centre. If we add to this the times of splendour during the mining of the Sierra Almagrera we can comprehend that we are in a town with a great deal of history in its
streets and houses, as seen in the castle, the Town
Hall or the house of the poet Sotomayor.
The
cuevana city welcomed the practices of oar and piragüismo of the 2005 Mediterranean Games. These activities took place in a marsh territory. For this, a special channel was built, based
on a project of environmental adjustment, which depicts
the zone as an important recreation and sports area.
The climate is characterized by prolonged
droughts and sporadic heavy storms, which has allowed to carve a rather muddy but beautiful landscape at
the same time.
Those visiting this region will be able to admire
fertile valleys that come from Moorish times -Moorish people were the first ones who cultivated them-, where the traditional agriculture of irrigated
land combines with modern irrigation techniques. Thanks to the construction of the Almanzora marsh and irrigation infrastructures,
this municipality is being transformed into one of
the main centres of agricultural development of the
province.
One
of the great attractions in Cuevas del Almanzora
is its beaches: a stroll by the coastal side shows
how it is possible to find along 14 km calm and open beaches, in contrast to trimmed and steep beaches that are hidden behind the mountainous
bulks that join in the same sea.
Nowadays, we can see a magnificent combination of history with increasing tourist development.
