Carnival
In
carnival celebrations people usually wear masks to on their faces while walking on the streets.
Main
fair
It
is held in autumn and coincides with 13 November, which
is Saint Diego de Alcala´s day, the town patron
saint. At this time, Cuevas is full of colour, bustle,
fair ground huts, Chinese lanterns, stalls, open air,
restaurants, and thousands of temporary stalls.
Easter
Faith,
silence, and local passion are apparent during these
days in Cuevas del Almanzora.
The living representation of the entry of Jesus into
Jerusalem on Palm Sunday initiates the Easter Period,
during which processional floats of great artistic
merit parade the streets to the admiration of the
public. Brotherhoods, such as our Lady of las Angustias
(Easter Tuesday), our Father Jesus of Nazareth
(Monday, Thursday) or the procession of the Holly
Funeral (Good Friday) have preserved the purest essence of such an old tradition.
Vieja
Day
This
celebration, which dates back to mid eighteenth century,
has no longer any religious connotations as it has
become a holiday during which people enjoy a free day, eating typical dishes and desserts.
The protagonist of the day is La Vieja, a doll made
of brightly coloured paper inside which sweets and
dried fruit are hidden for the children.
Virgen del Carmen
This
fair, which has a seafaring flavour, is celebrated on
16th July and ends witch the solemn procession of the patron
of Cuevas through the streets.
Neighbourhood
Celebrations
These
take place during the Christmas period and all of
them include an old custom known as the "nomination".
Saint
Antón
The
celebration in honour of Saint Antón, patron
of the animals, is considered one of the most popular celebrations; multitudinal procession in which San
Antón is taken to the church of Saint Antonio
Abbot.
